Leading thinkers and concerned citizens have offered their vision for how we can fix this thing – a timely reminder that no matter how dire the situation, people all over the world will come together to help solve our biggest challenges.
Here are some of our favourites:
1) From the esteemed Bill McKibben, 350.org: "We're going to have to work harder – in the next 50 months we're going to go straight at the fossil fuel companies, whose business model means the destruction of the planet's climate system. It's us or them, and I'd rather it be us."
2) Will McCallum, Guardian reader, writes: "There should be a direct transfer of fossil fuel subsidies into a grant for community energy."
3) Jayati Ghosh, professor of economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India, says: "In developing countries, the most important goals are to help people adapt to climate changes that we already see, and to find ways of mitigation without burdening the poor or preventing their access to essential goods and services."
4) And from Steve Howard, chief sustainability officer at IKEA:"Let’s choose clean air and renewable energy over fossil fuels. Let’s choose energy efficiency in every home and building: saving money and creating jobs. Let’s choose solar power for every roof and LED for every light."
