Today, the creator of a petition calling for the end to a brutal bull-killing tournament in Spain is sending her petition to the regional government of Castilla y Leon. Pepi Vegas has been joined by 52,348 people and made this one of the largest and most exciting campaigns launched in Spain using the Avaaz Community Petition platform.
Pepi is protesting the Toro de la Vega tournament: a yearly celebration of bull torture where a bull is freed into an open field and chased by hundreds of people by foot and on horseback. The pursuers harass and brutally kill the bull with spears. This year's bull, Volante, is set to suffer the same fate on 11 September – but Vegas is hoping to stop that.
In addition to the petition, Vegas will be alerting over 20 journalists in Spain, hoping to dramatically raise the profile of the issue. This is a great example of what one person can achieve when they decide to act.
