Sun Jifa, a farmer from Guanmashan, northern China, thought his life was over when he lost both his arms building a bomb for blast fishing – a dangerous and too common practice in parts of east and south-east Asia.

Unable to afford expensive prosthetics, he could have easily given up. Instead, he decided to build himself new hands from scratch:
