United States

Is this what American 'justice' looks like?

by Avaaz Team - posted 22 January 2013 16:06

The US prison system is fundamentally broken – with too many inmates (the highest incarceration rate in the world), chronic discrimination, spiralling costs and corporate takeovers. In 2011 alone, over 1.5 million Americans were arrested on drug-related charges, with over 650,000 arrested just for marijuana possession. A disproportionate number of those arrested and incarcerated are people of colour.

It doesn't have to be this way. As President Barack Obama begins his second term, he has the power – with our support – to end the failed "war on drugs" and reform the US prison system.

Share this infographic widely to help make sure the truth gets out – it's past time to end the disastrous, decades-old drug war.
